The mouth of the Bạch Đằng river, 938

The guide’s boy

When Lãng was twelve, the enemy took his father to show them the river channels. He never came back.

Seven years later, enemy ships are about to sail into the river mouth again. The fishing village has not forgotten whose ships his father guided.

Lãng only remembers the marks his father carved on a bamboo pole.

Lãng stands alone at the landing while the villagers bow their heads and turn away.
A marked pole in the river: where enemy ships run aground, where our ships run aground, and the tips of the stakes.

The tide turns. Call it a beat too early, and the enemy ships still clear the stakes. A beat too late, and ours run aground with them.

Lãng on a mound, looking across at the Southern Han flagship.

On the prow of the flagship stands a man without armour.

The night before the tide: a camp by the river, fires on the bank.

History has written how this battle ends. Your turn hasn’t.
